How Can Counselling Help?

About Therapy

Counselling can help you to understand why you feel the way you do, and support you to find a way forward. I won't tell you what to do, or give advice, but rather I will listen to you, try to understand how life is for you and together we will help you to find a view of yourself and your situation which feels more positive. The research shows that counselling works best through a collaborative relationship that builds in terms of trust, understanding, empathy and communication. In our initial meeting we can work together to identify any goals you may have and work towards these as this will help you to notice any changes that are brought about through therapy.

My role throughout our relationship will be to support you and walk along side you to navigate through difficulties and help you seek out your own answers at your own pace. Speaking to someone who won’t judge you, is impartial, and is not involved in your situation can help to make it easier to talk about your thoughts and feelings.

"If you want an explanation for your present, look at your past.
If you want to know your future, look at your present."
Buddha.

The counselling relationship is different from other relationships in that it is confined to the times of sessions and the focus is solely on you. This gives you the opportunity to talk about whatever is bothering you and explore this without judgement or from feeling criticised or being told what to do by those around you. You can be reassured that what you say is confidential and you will not be asked to discuss or do anything that you don’t want to.

Certain life events can be very difficult to deal with, however, you do not have to be in crisis before choosing to have counselling.
