Frequently Asked Questions

Questions That You May Have

I’m already feeling low and have heard counselling can be upsetting. What if I end up feeling worse than I do now?

Counselling can, at times, feel like you are on a roller coaster as you come to realise things that may be upsetting. In most cases, having the opportunity to talk and work through these realisations with a therapist can be beneficial. You have the opportunity to understand yourself better and make different decisions or life choices in the future if you wish.

I’m not very good at talking about my feelings, so how will therapy benefit me?

Speaking to someone who won’t judge you, is impartial, and is not involved in the situation can help to make it easier to talk about your thoughts and feelings. Counselling also focuses on behaviour and thoughts, so the focus does not have to be solely on your feelings.

My family/friends don’t understand my situation, how will a therapist be any different?

I am trained and have experience of listening to people with a variety of different issues. I do this in a way that gives you the opportunity to talk about whatever is bothering you and explore this without judgement. You can be reassured that what you say is confidential and you will not be asked to discuss or do anything that you don’t want to.

I can’t even tell my closest friends and family what’s happening to me, how can I tell a stranger?

Sometimes it can be easier to talk to a stranger about what’s going on in your life, as it is a safe space and what you say does not leave the session.

What will happen in the first session?

The first session lasts for approximately 50 minutes. I will listen to your worries and we can see if I am the right person to work with you. It is a chance to think about what you would like to get out of counselling and ask questions. The counselling process will be explained, covering things such as confidentiality and how to arrange and cancel appointments.

What happens after the first session?

If we both feel that counselling could be beneficial, you might want to arrange to have a second session. There is no pressure to arrange a further session after the first session. You may decide not to have counselling or you may like to have some space to think about whether to begin sessions.

How often are the sessions?

Once a week is appropriate for the majority of people to begin with and at a later stage some people choose to come fortnightly as they feel the benefits of therapy. If you are unable to attend weekly sessions we can plan the frequency of the sessions to suit your lifestyle.

How many sessions will I need?

This is different for everyone depending on the issues you are facing and your personal requirements. Some people benefit from short term counselling whilst others benefit from longer term counselling. We will have regular reviews which give you the opportunity to reflect about where you are within your counselling process and ensure it is meeting your needs. If you would like to end your counselling sessions you can choose to do so at any point.
